How far can you harness the potential of an electric guitar ? French producer Catartsis, talented and eclectic musician already seen on Ygam, Larmes or Abyss Recordings, provides us some elements of response. For his first solo appearance, he decided to use as only instrument of composition his Epiphone guitar, and successfully manages to create wide ranges of sounds, oscillating between soft rhythms, deep basslines and delicates musings. « Au-dehors de la raison » is a complex organisation of textures, showing some solid sound-design skills and a certain appetence for musical progressions and evolving aspects. The refined design of the EP or its almost watery acoustics mades us think to specific universes as Raime’s, and the slow pace of the project aims to build imaginary situations, strange feelings, extending some suggestive flavors of introspection towards deeper conscious experiences.

Among his inspirations, Catartsis happily quotes Abul Mogard, previously-discussed Raime, Portishead, Rrose and a trip in frosty landscapes of Iceland which occurred in 2018. His music, hard to define, juggles between these various atmospheres, although linked each other by serious analogies. The futuristic aspect of the EP, and sometimes dystopic, can be one of these. We often seem to hear in Catartsis compositions a ticking, a tireless binary rhythm steady like hands on a clock. Is time running out ? Or maybe time, free from the fetters of routine when he’s displayed in music, can finally be approached with a sweet fascination.

Because there definitely is some delicacy in « Au-dehors de la raison », a gentle look on our condition and our quite absurd - and yet contemporary - behaviors. Thus the title of the project (in english, literally : « Outside the Reason ») reflects perfectly how you should listen to this gem : with your naked ears and body.
