For his second appearance on Etang Brulant, frenchman Les Maux is back with a second project oscillating between harsh hip-hop instrumentals, broken beats and ethereal landscapes. Structured with field recordings, voices samples and dreamy pads played with a cheap Yamaha synth, accompanied with his faithful basslines, this new effort brings back the atmosphere of ’Argument de l’illusion’ (EB05) and a bitter gaze sincerely expressed.
After an ambient opening using sounds from brazilian rainforest and a 2019 Jair Bolsonaro speech, transfigured in a magical and almost ritualistic vision, the project quickly turns into a breakbeat parade filled of strong melodies which conveys an immediate melancholy as a contagious virus. Solid build-ups made from different layers of drums explore various cultures (Taïwan, Syria, Palestine, America…). and interrogates the notion of perpetual injustices corrupting our modern societies and continuously spreading all over the world - like an ugly sore that became gangrenous.
After discussing with the artist, it appears that the 5-tracked EP has been designed with two instruments, a computer, some red wine, cigarettes, a prostrate behavior and a tragical sense of history eating any new optimistic theories about the outcome of our political systems. At the end of the project, the listener understands that Les Maux’s will of understand, lived through eternal circles walked in a square room, remains unchanged. In the smokey and saturated air question marks arise, leaving a man with the absurd pain of an inconceivable mankind. Stronger than before.
